Step 2: Nose
Gently swirl the glass and take a deep breath in. Notice the aromas and try to identify different scents like vanilla, oak, or spice.
Step 3: Sip
Take a small sip and let it coat your tongue. Pay attention to the flavors and how they develop as you hold the whiskey in your mouth.

Whiskey FAQs
Simple answers to some of the most common questions about whiskey.
All bourbon is whiskey, but not all whiskey is bourbon.
Whiskey is the broad category. Bourbon is a specific type of American whiskey made from at least 51% corn and aged in new, charred oak barrels. That process creates the familiar caramel, vanilla, and oak flavors many people associate with bourbon.
There isn’t a right or wrong way.
Neat means no ice or water. On the rocks adds ice, which slowly softens the whiskey. A few drops of water can also open up aromas and flavors, especially in higher-proof whiskies.
Bourbon is typically sweeter, with caramel, vanilla, and toasted-oak flavors.
Rye is generally spicier and drier, with pepper, herbs, and baking spice.
Scotch is made in Scotland and can range from light and fruity to rich, smoky, and peated.
Many smoky flavors come from peat.
Some Scotch distilleries dry malted barley using peat smoke. That smoke flavors the grain and can create notes ranging from a light campfire character to bold smoke, earth, leather, and sea salt.
No.
Age can add richness and complexity, but it does not automatically make a whiskey better. Too much time in the barrel can allow the oak to overpower the other flavors. Quality and balance matter more than age alone.
Tasting notes are words used to describe the aromas and flavors people notice in whiskey.
Notes such as vanilla, caramel, cherry, citrus, chocolate, baking spice, or oak are usually not added ingredients. They develop through the grain, fermentation, distillation, and barrel-aging process.
The warming sensation comes from the alcohol.
Higher-proof whiskies naturally feel stronger. Taking smaller sips, letting the whiskey rest briefly in the glass, or adding a few drops of water can soften the sensation.
Proof measures alcohol strength.
In the United States, proof is twice the alcohol-by-volume percentage. An 80-proof whiskey is 40% alcohol by volume, while a 100-proof whiskey is 50% alcohol by volume.
Many people begin with bourbon or Irish whiskey.
These styles often feature approachable flavors such as caramel, vanilla, honey, soft spice, and light fruit. Our bartenders are always happy to recommend a first pour based on the flavors you enjoy.
Look, smell, sip, and take your time.
Notice the color, then gently smell the whiskey without placing your nose too deeply into the glass. Take a small sip and let it move across your palate. Pay attention to the first flavors, how they change, and what remains afterward. That lingering flavor is called the finish.
